Pele is the Hawaiian Goddess of fire, lightning, and volcanoes. Legends of Pele abound on the Big Island where Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, has been erupting continuously since 1983. I was inspired to paint her under the volcano with the Hawaiian state fish, the humuhumunukunukuapuaa (I’m not making this up), swimming up from the smoldering lava as it reaches the sea.
